EN-RC-16.5 Raiding Hard Drives

von Omid Hosseini

Task

1. Study the text and the table on pp 122 f in Oxford English for Information

Technology. Second edition. Oxford University Press 2009.

2. Do exercises A and B 1 and 2.

Aim

  • I can answer the questions in english .
  • I can say wether the statements are ture or false.

Self-evaluation

I completed the tasks without any bigger problem.

A

1) Give to reasons, why server computers often have connected hard drives?

Because then, they have more security if one disk is going to shut down.

Two disks can also improve the reading speed.

2) Why is RAID 0 particularly suited to imaging and scientific work?

If one disk is damaged, u can easily replace the damaged one with the hot spare system.

3) What is the advantage of using drive mirroring?

It’s reading speed and the security.

4) To store data, RAID levels higher than 1 require:

Up to about a third of more disk space

5) Where is the backup data stored in a RAID 5 system?

In one HDD.

6) Which levels of RAID can reconstruct data lost in failed drives from the backup data spread across the remaining drives in the array?

RAID 1, RAID 2 – 4, RAID 5

7) Which level of RAID is the fastest?

RAID 0, but has zero security.

B1 and 2

1 Match the terms in Table A with the statements in Table

a) RAID - III) Redundant array of inexpensive disks

b) RAID Controller - V) A device for controlling a set of hard disks

c) An Array - IV) A set

d) Striping - II) A process of spreading data across a set of disks

e) Mirroring - VI) The technique of writing the same information to more than one drive

f) Parity data - I) Information which is used to restore data if one of the RAID drives fail

2 Mark the following statements as True or False:

a) Small disks tend to have lower seek times than large disks. - False.

b) RAID controllers make one large hard disk act like a set of small disks. - False.

c) In RAID systems, one disk is filled with data before the next disk is used. - False.

d) A higher numbered RAID array uses a more elaborate system to protect the integrity of data. - True.

e) RAID 0 provides good data recovery. - False.

f) Small file servers do not usually use RAID level 3. - True
